There is no argument that his research and conclusions have merit, but I question his discounting other factors. There is also the reality that “cool cities” are cool cities and that is a factor that thriving communities somehow possess and sustain. Having high talent is likely a component inherent in a “cool city” but it’s hard to make the assertion that’s all of it. There is also the cart before the horse question: which comes first, the talent is present stimulating a “cool city” or the area attracts talent because it’s where talented people want to reside. Residing in Reno, Nevada on the other side of the mountains from San Francisco I have the chance to visit often. It’s expensive and pretentious but it’s also fun and hip. The geography is terrific being located close to ocean, mountains and probably the finest wine country in North America. The weather is consistently mild and outdoor activity is available year round. These are factors that can’t be duplicated.
There are initiatives in several states, Michigan certainly being one of them, to build and promote “cool cities”. The problem is they are multi-dimensional and more often than not evolve naturally taking time to distinguish themselves. If policy makers and city planners get it right, the talent then will fall into place.
