We spend a lot of our time on improving schooling in Detroit. It matters enormously for the kids growing up there. But many successful cities have lousy schools. That is because there are lots of households without school age children. When young professionals–who are flocking to cities–have kids most move to the suburbs. And are replaced by the next generation of young professionals before they have kids. So we need to work on all three of your attributes of successful cities, but Detroit can make a lot of progress getting the first two right. Good urban schools is a real challenge that everyone is struggling with.

In my recent visits to Detroit, I saw many young people walking around and being consumers at the local restaurants and shops. The problem, I see is that not many children are with them. We need Detroit if we are going to become a viable state! In my opinion, a city needs 3 ingredients for success; low crime, places where people want to live and good schools. Detroit with the help of everyone in the state needs to figure out the final ingredient!
