The reason we wall ourselves off from the rest of society is because we don’t want to have to deal with Diversity. If I could live in a neighborhood with middle class white people I would be fine with that, even though I make enough money to afford a gigantic house in an exclusive suburb. In fact I’d rather live in a middle class white neighborhood than a ritzy suburb. The problem is there are no middle class white neighborhoods. Every middle class neighborhood in the country is in flux. The pattern is repeated everywhere. Where there is a nice middle class white neighborhood, then Diverse people move in, then people like me who can afford to move out, then the neighborhood goes to hell. Property values drop. Schools go to crap. And I just shrug it off because it doesn’t affect me. But the problem isn’t me. It’s Diversity. We don’t want to deal with it. Sure we like the idea of it, but Not In My Back Yard.
